The Lotus from James Bond's The Spy Who Loved Me was sold for £111,500 ($162,825 or €128,415) at an auction in London. The white-colored 1976 Lotus Esprit was acquired by a private American collector who was giving his bids over the phone at the sale in Bonhams. The collector depicted himself as a Lotus and James Bond enthusiast and said the car would be conveyed to Atlanta, Georgia.
The vehicle is one of two Lotus cars driven by Roger Moore in the 1977 Bond movie, which transformed into an amphibious car when it landed on the sea during a chase. A spokesperson from Bonhams said: "We are delighted with the result and delighted that it attracted worldwide attention."
Now, from the classic Bond movie Goldfinger, the registration number AU1 was also put up for public sale at the same auction in London's Olympia, but failed to find a buyer after its reserve price was not reached. It had been projected to bring in between £80,000-£100,000. The AU1 was the very first registration issued in Nottingham in 1903, and was installed on the Rolls Royce Phantom III which the arch villain Goldfinger used in the movie. It is interesting to note that in the periodic table, AU is the chemical symbol for gold.
