2009 Audi Q5 recalled due to trim covers problem

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) announced the safety recall of about 6,000 model year 2009 Audi Q5 units, which have been found to be at risk of its trim covers getting loose once the head airbag is deployed. The NHTSA's official website states that a defective cover piece mounted on the A-pillar can detach if the head airbag is deployed and hit the front seat occupants of the vehicle. It's expected that Audi will inspect the faulty parts free of charge and replace them if necessary.
This news is surprising since the Audi Q5 received a top NHTSA safety pick earlier this year after scoring five-star for the safety of both the driver and the passenger in NHTSA's frontal crash tests. It also scored five-star ratings for front and rear protection in NHTSA side impact tests. Johan de Nysschen, President, Audi of America, said that its Audi engineers place unwavering emphasis on the protection of motorists and their passengers.
That the Audi Q5 has outstanding ratings mean that it meets the most rigorous safety standards in the world. Institute president Adrian Lund said that recognizing vehicles at the head of the class for safety assists consumers in helps consumers distinguish the best overall choices without needing to read through multiple test results. The recall will begin in January 2010.
