A landmark in transmission technology is now on hand in the Audi S3 and S3 Sportback athletic compact versions. The S tronic dual-clutch transmission combines the powerful two-liter TFSI motor with the road in a way that is both athletic and economical. This guarantees faster acceleration, high agility and ride comfort together with improved fuel economy. A true wonder of engineering, the ground-breaking S tronic dual-clutch transmission has been a phenomenon ever since it was introduced in the Audi TT 3.2 quattro in spring 2003. It unites the advantages of a compact sixspeed manual transmission with the traits of a contemporary automatic.
The driver therefore benefits from massive agility and driving pleasure with acceleration that is both united and active, without any detectable disturbance in the flow of power. This goes together with good economy due to low fuel utilization, and comfortable operation. The ultracompact S tronic with dual multi-plate clutch can at the same time preselect two gears. With its clever electrohydraulic function, it changes from one gear to the next in a split second. It can thus generate engine torque as high as 350 Nm (258.15 lb-ft). The power source in the S3 is a perfect partner: the 2.0 TFSI has already garnered the “Engine of the Year Award” a total of four times. It generates 195 kW (265 hp) and peak torque of 350 Nm (258.15 lb-ft), which stays constant from 2,500 to 5,000 rpm.
Weighing in only at 152 kilograms (335.10 pounds), this turbocharged direct-fuel-injection motor powers the Audi S3 and the S3 Sportback into the elite class of compact sports cars. The S tronic makes the active leader of the A3 family even faster. It further reduces, by two-tenths of a second, the time necessary to sprint from a standstill to 100 km/h (0 to 62.14 mph) in just 5.5 seconds for the S3 and 5.6 seconds for the Sportback. Simultaneously, fuel consumption has been enhanced to 8.3 liters/100km (28.34 mpg) with CO2 discharges of just 193 g/km (310.60 g/mile) (A3 Sportback: 8.4 liters/100km (28.00 mpg) and 195 g/km (313.82 g/mile). These two athletic versions are now offered at dealerships: the S3 for €38,900 and the S3 Sportback for €39,800.
