2009 Audi S4 and S4 Avant details and pricing revealed

2009 Audi S4 Sedan/Avant

It has eluded us for a while with its different semblances which included the body styles of Sedan and Avant, but today it has finally received a price tag. Audi has placed the S4 and its S4 Avant models as rivals to the mid-sized sedan performance leadership, but the upcoming RS4 will actually be the company‚ true entry into the division. The S4 has a supercharged, direct-injected 3.0-liter V6 engine generating a remarkable 333 hp (245kW), about 10 percent more than Bmw‚ twin-turbo inline-six unit found in the 335i, which gives the vehicle an acceleration rate of 0-62 mph (100 km/h) in 5.1 seconds. This list of remarkable performances can be yours for a beginning price of €50,950 ($67,100) for the S4 sedan, with the Avant it begins at €52,600 ($69,300). The prices for US markets have not yet been released. However, the present S4 Cabrio is tagged at $57,125 (€43,522), which means that the new cars should start around the $60,000 mark.

With the revelation of the prices for the cars, Audi also unveiled the fuel usage as well. According to Audi, the S4 sedan is good for 24.25mpg (9.7 l/100km) while the Avant gets a slightly lower 23.75mpg (9.9 l/100km). The S4 is equipped with an active differential with driver-selectable settings as new feature. This aids the S4 in reducing steering force required when turning the vehicle by providing an extra superposition gear. This advance design utilizes an oil bath, a multidisc clutch and an electro-hydraulic actuator, providing almost total torque diversion to either wheel on a given axle.

On-board computers help the car respond to road condition changes within 100ms. Audi's driver-preference features such as the "drive select" dynamics system improves throttle response, shift-points and speed-sensitive steering performance to allow the car to be as domesticated or as wild as the driver wishes it to be. There are three modes to choose from: comfort, auto and dynamic. These are all included in all S4 that comes with the drive select system. Cars that come with the MMI system is provided with a fourth, driver-programmable setting. These select systems are compatible with cars that also come with adaptive control shock absorbers, the sport differential or dynamic steering. These vehicles will be available in the European markets starting March of 2009, while in the US they will not be available until much later, probably in the middle of the year, and they will be receiving a 2010 model instead of the European 2009.
