The brand new 2009 Dodge Ram 1500 has received the five-star safety ratings for both driver and front-passenger safety in a head-on collision tests carried out by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). NHTSA carries out frontal crash tests by smashing vehicles against a wall made for that purpose at speeds of 35 mph, which is the corresponding speed of a head-on crash between two comparable vehicles, each moving at 35 mph. Using crash-test dummies, devices record the force of impact to the head, neck, chest, pelvis, legs and feet of each dummy. A star for a frontal crash is a sign that serious head and chest injuries to the driver and front passenger are most likely. Serious injury is defined as one which requires immediate medical attention, and may be life-threatening. On the other hand, a five-star score shows that there is a 10 percent less serious injury.
