2009 Tokyo Motor Show: Mazda Kiyora Concept

Mazda Kiyora Concept

For the Tokyo Motor Show, Mazda chose to display its wares of next-generation engines and automatic transmissions. At the exhibit, we see the Mazda SKY-G direct-injection petrol engine, its Mazda SKY-D clean diesel engine and the Mazda SKY Drive high-efficiency automatic transmission. Furthermore, for the first time in its home country, Mazda is showing its Kiyora concept car. Firstly, the Mazda SKY-G is a direct-injection petrol engine with significantly improved fuel economy and power output due to enhanced thermal efficiency. Its design is meant to reduce mechanical friction and achieve an optimal air-fuel mix.

The Mazda SKY-G's fuel economy and torque are improved by about 15% compared to Mazda's current 2.0-liter engine. This equates to the fuel economy seen in a Mazda 2 to be achieved by a Mazda 3. Secondly, the Mazda SKY-D engine reduces mechanical friction to the level of a petrol engine. Fuel economy is improved by about 20% compared to the current 2.2-liter diesel engine due to the following: piezo injectors, a two-stage turbocharger and other technologies. This equates to fuel economy of the Mazda 2 being achieved in the Mazda 6. Thirdly, Mazda's SKY-Drive automatic transmission offers better feel and a 5% improvement in fuel consumption.

Fuel economy is improved due to a complete redesign that reduces mechanical friction, a revised torque converter and clutch with minimized slip, and an optimized lock-up mechanism. Another result of these modifications is giving the driver the feel of a dual-clutch transmission. Lastly, Mazda showcases the Mazda Kiyora Concept car. It was first seen at the Paris Motor Show last year and it will debut in Japan next month. It runs on Mazda's SKY-G engine mated to the SKY-Drive 'box and can return around 90mpg. The car attains these figures with Mazda's use of lightweight materials, improved aerodynamics and Mazda's i-stop stop/start system.
