Mitsubishi PX-MiEV Concept
At the Tokyo Motor Show, Mitsubishi unveiled the PX-MiEV Concept, the precursor to the plug-in hybrid that it intends to bring to the market by 2013. Many are looking at the concept to get an idea of what the next Outlander would look like since it won't be arriving until 3 or 4 years in the future. The PX MiEV concept is actually based on a Japanese market Outlander and is designed to show the appearance of a mid-sized crossover SUV with petrol electric power. The production hybrid is expected to go on sale in the UK as well as in a number of other countries.
Don't let its simple looks fool you into thinking that it is a run-of-the-mill vehicle.Powering the PX are two electric motors -- one on each axle -- combined with a 1.6-liter four-cylinder petrol engine. When used in electric only mode, the PX only has a range of 30 miles. On longer trips, the driver will have to use petrol power. The concept is speculated to be good for 141mpg, which a company insider says can be easily attained on a production version.
In a matter of a few years, Mitsubishi will already be using this technology on a small crossover. An Outlander would appear to fit in with that. The car‚ interior as well as its exterior is stripped down to the essentials. Concept cars usually go the other way and seem to try to get all the flourishes it can possibly get. Thus, the car's simplicity is taken as a good sign that Mitsubishi intends to produce the PX. The car has a smattering of innovation though. The PX has what the company calls a cocochi (Japanese word meaning comfort) interior including anti-bacterial seat fabric. To minimize the drain on the battery from the air-con system, the PX has heat reflecting glass and paint.
