The Jetta TDI is the very first 'clean diesel' to garner the award, given out by the Green Car Journal beginning way back in 2005. "The 2009 Volkswagen Jetta TDI epitomizes what the Green Car of the Year honor is all about," said Ron Cogan, who is the current editor and publisher of the Green Car Journal. The key aspect of the Jetta's feature sheet that won the award are its 41mpg highway fuel efficiency, safe level emissions and affordability in contrast to gasoline-electric hybrids. The Ford Fusion Hybrid, the Bmw 335d, the Vue 2-mode Hybrid of Saturn and the Smart ForTwo were the only cars completing the five final contenders for the GCOTY prize. Edging out the 335d isn't a major surprise, since the 3-series' diesel member is as much about power and handling as it is about economy. Coming out in the lead of a dedicated city car and two of the most current hybrids on the car market is no small achievement, however. Photos after the jump!
