Chrysler will take over the research and development of hybrid powertrains as part of the partnership with Fiat. The resulting technologies that will be developed will be used by both companies. Chrysler will be responsible for the raw build of the technology, while Fiat will take charge of the fine tuning of the powertrain to make it a fit for each brand. An InsideLine report said that the Alfa Romeo Giulietta will be the first Italian car to get an American hybrid powertrain. The car is offered in numerous engines: For petrol, it has the 1.4TB (120 HP) and 1.4TB MultiAir (170 HP); while the diesel engines include 1.6 JTDM (105 HP) and 2.0 JTDM (170 HP) as well as an exclusive 1750 TBi 235 HP with Quadrifoglio Verde configuration.
The hybrid version is likely to be released several years from now. Aside from the hybrids, a wider version of the "C" platform is currently being developed for the Giulietta. Dubbed the Compact Wide, it will serve as a base for at least seven new cars included in the Chrysler, Dodge and Jeep brands.
The platform has a weight of only 174 kg (which is 10% lighter than its predecessor) and is built from 84% high and ultrahigh strength steel. McPherson front suspensions are used, while the rear suspension uses a dual-link layout. To reduce weight, the front suspension arms and the rear suspension crossmember are made from aluminum.
