2011 Audi RS5

We're bringing you the latest spy photos of the Audi RS5, which is set to be launched at the Frankfurt Auto Show this September. The RS4 caused an upset back in 2005, when it proved to be a fierce competitor against BMW's benchmark M3 coupe. The RS4 benefited from the quattro AWD, a high-revving V8, and better weight distribution, which cemented its reputation as a high-performing vehicle. Since RS variants are usually only released in the final couple of years of a standard model's product cycle, Audi need to fill the gap before a new RS4 is released, hence, the new RS5. The RS5 apparently has a feature not previously seen -- an adjustable rear bootlid spoiler.

The RS5 has been photographed being tested in California's Death Valley, which could only mean that a US launch is likely. With the release of the new generation BMW M3Coupe and Sedan and the Mercedes C63 AMG, Audi will have some catching up to do.

Audi does rise up to the occasion and the buzz is that a potential powertrain option is the same 4.2-liter V8 as the RS4, however, power will likely be boosted to 450 horsepower. In addition, the car is believed to get the option of Audi's newly upgraded S-tronic dual-clutch gearbox along with a conventional manual gearbox too. While its possible that it may use a derivative of the V10 from the RS6, it seems to be too expensive for a car that will have to compete in pricing with its rivals.
