The Ford Figo, a new supermini, has been launched for the Indian market. Essentially, the Figo is a previous generation Fiesta with the front-end of the current model. Ford's Chennai plant in India will build the car but as Ford aims to further establish itself in the emerging market, the plant will undergo a $500 million refurbishment. This investment is anticipated to double its output to 200,000 units per year. Ford president and CEO Alan Mulally said the Ford Figo shows how committed the company is about India. He adds that Ford's intention is to compete in all segments of this car market. You might ask why Ford chose this segment to focus on. Well, the supermini segment is the largest and most important in India . Michael Boneham, president and managing director, Ford India, said that while the Ford Figo will face a lot of competition, the company is confident that it will be extremely attractive to Indian car buyers. He adds, "We believe Ford Figo is a big game-changer for Ford that will help transform our brand into a volume player in India.
