2010 Geneva Motor Show: Vw Polo GTI

2011 Vw Polo GTI

Sales will begin this August for Volkswagen's new Polo GTI. This new car which was unveiled today at the Geneva Motor Show, which is designed to appear like a small Golf GTI, is equipped with a 1.4-liter Twincharger engine that offers 177bhp. This new car has the lowest kerb weight in its class and uses a drivetrain like the one in the Seat Ibiza Cupra. The Audi A1 and the upcoming Skoda Fabia vRS will be given the same mix of engine and gearbox. The engine's 177bhp is produced at 6200rpm, with 184lb ft of torque available from 2000rpm.

The Polo, which has a kerb weight of 1184kg, can get to 62mph in 6.9sec and on to a top speed of 141mph. The transmission is a seven-speed DSG, with an electronic differential on the front axle. Furthermore, the GTI's suspension is 15mm lower all over when compared to the standard Polo.

However, it does get its own springs and dampers. The styling of this car is a reminiscent of the bigger Golf GTI. We find the same honeycomb grille and red trim on its nose. The standard 17-inch alloys are designed similarly and it also has the Golf's checked seat cloth and flat-bottomed wheel. The Polo GTI will have a price of about £18,000 for the three-door variant. A five-door model will also be offered.
