2010 Japanese Grand Prix
For the second consecutive year, Red Bull’s Sebastian Vettel triumphed in the Japanese Grand Prix. Trailing him closely in this race was his teammate Mark Webber, who extends his championship lead to 14 points over Fernando Alonso (who took third place) and Vettel, who is now at second because of this first win since Valencia. McLaren’s goal to get a title gets dimmer as Jenson Button and Lewis Hamilton (who was held back by the loss of third gear) took fourth and fifth place respectively. The most dramatic moments in the race happened in the opening minutes. Even before the race started, there was already an incident that got everyone’s attention.
As Virgin's Lucas di Grassi was making his way to the dummy grid, he got into an immense and strange crash at the 130R. As the race got started, the fast-starting Vitaly Petrov (Renault) clipped Nico Hulkenberg's Williams and crashed into the barriers on the pits straight. A few moments later, Ferrari's Felipe Massa rode into the grass going into the first corner and bumped into Tonio Liuzzi's Force India.
The safety car immediately made an appearance. Robert Kubica had split the Red Bulls off the line, but the second-placed Renault pulled off on lap three after dropping its right rear wheel while running around behind the pace car. At the restart, Red Bull resumed one-two formation, with Vettel and Webber effortlessly pulling away from Ferrari’s Alonso at about a second per lap initially.
