Chrysler will be providing enthusiasts with a preview of its remodeled Jeep Grand Cherokee at the New York Auto Show this week, although the SUV will not yet be sold until 2010. This was confirmed through Chrysler's viability plant it submitted to the US Congress two months ago. Details concerning the new SUV have been released through an official preview. It will come as a 2011 model and will sit atop an advance car-like unibody platform and highlight Chrysler's forthcoming Phoenix V6 or a HEMI V8 as optional powerplants.
The economy measure in the Phoenix V6 is the utilization of cylinder-deactivation technology to shut down three cylinders, enabling it to function on half of its maximum displacement when under low load situations. This generally improves economy between 6-8 percent. In combination with the enhancement around-city handling which will be sourced from its unibody construction, the Cherokee could bring in considerable sales among mainstream customers.
Chrysler will refit its North Detroit assembly plant in Jefferson in preparation for the latest SUV and all other models which are yet to be revealed and will come in the same platform which Mercedes-Benz developed for its next-generation ML-Class SUV before the split of DaimlerChrysler. Because of this, there is strong indication that the Grand Cherokee may come with a two-mode hybrid powertrain, which was developed in collaboration with Daimler, BMW and GM.
