U.S. pricing for the 2010 HS250h dedicated luxury sedan starts at $34,200. Already garnering considerable pre-order sales in Japan, the hybrid is set to take the US by storm. It is firmly positioned at the entry-level sector of the luxury sedan market and aims to hit 25,000 sales in its first year. Although the Lexus HS250h and the Toyota Prius are not contemporaries, let us still compare them. Luxury car HS 250h is priced at over $12,000 more than a base Prius II.
The Premium trim HS250h starts at $36,970 while the Prius starts at $27,270 and can upgraded to more than $32,500 with the addition of items like the Solar Roof Package and common interior upgrades. In terms of fuel efficiency, the Prius is rated at 51mpg city/48mpg highway while the HS250h has a 35mpg city/34mpg highway rating. The HS250h shares a range of options with the 2010 Lexus RX, such as the new Remote Touch controller. The Prius doesn't have that option.
The HS250h is also the first to offer Lexus' Enform with Safety Connect telematics system. A base model HS250h is not priced much more than a high-end Prius but there is no overlap in the target market. The HS250h is clearly intended for the entry-luxury sedan buyer who wants something more efficient than the competition, not more efficient than anything on the road.
