As we told you back in December in this post, AMG revealed its new twin-turbo 5.5-litre V8 engine, which will make its debut in the 2010 Mercedes-Benz S63 AMG starting this summer. This new engine replaces the 6.2-litre V8, and promises to deliver more power as well as an improved fuel consumption. With a total output of 537bhp produced at 5500rpm, the new powerplant shows also a power increase comparing it to the 518bhp at 6800rpm in the 6.2-litre V8. Due to the fact that it is supercharged, also the torque is even more impressive: 590lb ft of torque between 2000 and 4500rpm comparing it to 464lb ft at 5200rpm produced in the current engine. A 563bhp, 664lb ft version of the will also be available for the S63 AMG as part of the performance package upgrade. Regarding the fuel consumption, the new engine that weighs only 204 kg, features Garett twin turbochargers and is mated to Mercedes’ seven-speed MCT transmission, shows a fuel consumption of 26.9mpg, impressive if we look at the current 6.2-litre V8 which delivers 19.6mpg.
