At last, after a long series of previews, the 2010 Opel Astra has been unwrapped in high resolution images with additional details. The latest Astra is essential in the company's attempt to regain what the present model lost to its strong-selling rival Ford Focus hatchback and Vw Golf VI. Although it is uncertain whether the model will hit US markets or not as a Saturn since the future of that brand is quite doubtful, the European market, with its penchant for hatches and more stringent emissions requirements, will be a different story altogether where Opel expects to bring hatch sales up.
After its Frankfurt Motor Show introduction this September, the 2010 Astra will hit the European market. Opel is planning to release its latest two-mode hybrid variant set to arrive at the end of next year. The development could be delayed however due to the carmaker's brand problems and the effect of GM's partial sell-off of its interest. Powerplant lineup includes typical turbo and naturally ventilated 1.4-liter and 1.6-liter units will be offered, producing 120-140hp (90-104kW) for the 1.4-liter and up to 180hp (134kW) for the 1.6-liter turbocharged.
There will also be diesel units for Europe, beginning with 1.3-liter economical version to a 1.7-liter mid-range and 2.0-liter turbo powerplant that comes with performance and economy. Patterned after the compact platform of the Delta FWD of GM, the 2010 Astra will once more be offered in coupe, three- and five-door hatches and wagon, together with a sedan in some select outlets. Although it has not yet been confirmed, there is likelihood that an Astra under one of GM's other brand banners, like Buick for instance, could also be produced in the US to keep costs down.
