2011 Opel Astra Sports Tourer
Opel has revealed the 2011 Astra Sports Tourer at the Paris Motor Show, the second variant of its new version of the Astra. The German manufacturer aims for this compact wagon to match or surpass the success of the hatchback. The Sports Tourer will be available with eight diesel and gasoline engines, which deliver from 95 hp to 180 hp. The Sports Tourer will be offered with the engines featured on the hatchback but will be getting one additional unit and a new engine-transmission combination. This new variant will be offered with the 1.4l turbo gasoline unit, which delivers 120 hp, coupled with a six-speed manual transmission. Opel also offers the 140 hp version of the same engine with a six-speed automatic transmission.
Interestingly, the Astra lineup will be offered with a start/stop technology, with the first use of the system to be the 1.3l CDTI ecoFLEX engine. Opel decided that since the Sports Tourer makes up about 25% of all Astra sales in Europe, it had to make the new Sports Tourer very user-friendly. In line with this goal, Opel created a new FlexFold Rear Seat system to allow a 60/40 split-fold for the rear seats, the first one in its segment.
The use of the FlexFold system increases the cargo load length to 1835 mm, higher by 28 mm than in the current Astra wagon. It provides a loading volume of in between 500 and 1550 liters. The wagon will also feature a new FlexFix system for carrying bikes. To those who are more into gadgets and technologies, the new Sports Tourer doesn’t disappoint as it features AFL+ adaptive forward lighting, Opel Eye front view camera system and the safety systems that are also offered on the hatchback Astra.
