Details and photos of the upgraded 911 GT3 came after the release of the modified Porsche 911 Carrera, Carrera 4 late in 2008 and the current Targa. As a standing tradition Porsche implemented less alteration to the external styling of the GT3 racecar, but focusing rather on internal revisions. The GT3 for the 2010 model year has received extra potency, enhanced handling and base price slightly higher than the previous model. After its introduction at the Geneva Motor Show this coming March, the upgraded car will be available in US markets this October with a price tag of $112,000 (exclusive of taxes) and its European sibling will be on sale earlier this coming May at a price of 116,947 (also exclusive of taxes).
The car received a 20hp (15kW) power boost compared to the retiring model, and is now generating 435hp (320kW) with its naturally-ventilated flat-six powerhouse. Revisions to the powertrain consist of a larger 3.8-liter displacement compared to the former 3.6-liter, including an upgraded VarioCam system that, for the first time, adapts both the intake and exhaust valves. The torque level was also boosted at medium engine rpms. Consequently, the sprint rate from 0-100km/h is only 4.1 seconds and the maximum speed is 312km/h. Handling was improved by modifying the PSM stability management system to permit more flexibility, with a available option to deactivate both Stability Control and Traction Control in separate processes. Maximum driver control is achieved by not reactivating the functions automatically even under the most severe driving situations, but only through the push of a button.
The latest GT3 comes with even strong grip and stability at high speed with specific revisions of the vehicle's aerodynamics providing double downforces both at the front and rear compared with the previous version. Simultaneously, the new aero pack provides the GT3 a totally new appearance highlighted by the new bi-xenon headlamps, LED rear lamp clusters, and revised air intakes and outlets. Handling is enhanced further with increased spring stiffness and anti-roll bars employing electronically controlled PASM active suspension management. Lightweight wheels and upgraded brake system with bigger carbon-ceramic discs and new aluminum covers are also included in the package. In the later part of 2009 the GT3 will come with a set of freshly developed PADM (Porshce Active Drivetrain Mount) powerplant bearings which automatically detect hard-style driving and adapt the normally elastic engine suspension and bracing to a stiffer arrangement. Lastly, the GT3 will come with a lift system option for the front axle that enables the driver to raise the front of the car to a maximum of 30mm, permitting the car to negotiate speed-humps and steep driveways while avoiding damage to the underbody of the car.
