Motor Trend's 2010 Sport/Utility of the Year is none other than the 2010 Subaru Outback. Subaru of America, Inc. is smiling from ear-to-ear for this victory that follows the Forester's win for the 2009 award, making Subaru the first automaker to win two consecutive Motor Trend Sport/Utility of the Year awards. Motor Trend editor-in-chief, Angus MacKenzie, pointed to the vehicle‚ design, clever details and competitive pricing as its strengths. He describes the 2010 Subaru Outback to offer a unique combination of comfort, efficiency, versatility and value. He summed the Subaru Outback with this phrase: a terrific all-rounder with broad appeal. We agree that the Subaru Outback deserves this award since it does have car-like refinement, drivability and gas mileage on the road, however; it is as capable of roughing it out too. Thomas J. Doll, executive vice president and chief operating officer, Subaru of America Inc., accepted the award, expressing its pride and honor to receive it for the second consecutive year.
Doll called the Subaru Outback an icon of performance and capability. While it had been the original SUV alternative, it now has improved power, economy and increased dimensions. In other words, it is the complete package. Subaru of America is the top performing automaker of 2009. When asked to comment about it, Doll said that the success of its business is founded not only on its products, but also on the commitment and dedication of its retail sales network and great sales and marketing programs. He said that the Motor Trend award added validation to the Subaru brand.
The Outback is manufactured at Subaru's zero-landfill plant in Lafayette, Indiana. It is available with either a 170-hp 2.5-liter four-cylinder boxer engine or a 256-hp 3.6-liter six-cylinder boxer engine. The 2010 Outback is built on an all-new platform featuring a 2.8-inch longer wheelbase (now 107.9 inches) that improves ride and interior space, especially rear seat legroom. Another revision done on the 2010 Outback is the increased hip and shoulder room. Pricing starts from $22,995.
