Although the latest plug-in version Toyota Prius has an amazing fuel economy of 50mpg to its name, there are reports during its initial testing saying that it is doing on average in excess of 65mpg US (78mpg UK, 3.6liters/100km). The 65mpg result is more amazing not because has licked the 50mpg official figure, but because it was done not in the laboratory but in the real world streets with all the attendant driving hurdles. Toyota is presently evaluating a number of lithium-ion battery packs to find out which of them could offer the dual quality of durability and power longevity to be utilized in the Prius plug-in. In the latter part of 2009 Toyota will be broadening its Prius plug-in test by importing 150 models to be test-driven by colleges, commercial fleets, and chosen celebrities. The Toyota Prius plug-in production version is set to be available either by the end of 2010 or the first quarter of 2011 at the latest. [source automotivenews]
