2011 Chevrolet Caprice Police Car
Chevrolet Caprice is being offered as a rear-drive police car, starting in the last quarter of 2010 while deliveries will begin in the first quarter of 2011. The Caprice will be engineered and assembled by General Motors' Holden subsidiary in Australia. The announcement, which was made recently at the International Association of Chiefs of Police convention, in Denver , Colo. , also said that the Caprice will be based on the rwd vehicle platform. This was used to produce the rwd Pontiac G8, Chevrolet Camaro and several Holden vehicles including the Chevrolet Caprice that is sold in the Middle East . The car will be marketed to police agencies as the Caprice Police Patrol Vehicle.
Interested police agencies can opt for the V-8 or V-6 engine. GM spokesman Brian Goebel described the Caprice as a significant addition to the police community. Currently, it is the rwd Ford Crown Victoria that has the bulk of the U.S. police car business. However, in 2011, the Crown Victoria is set to be dropped. In addition, a police pursuit front-drive Taurus is under development. Goebel said the car introduced at the Colorado convention is a concept and that some of the elements and styling will vary in the production version. Further details have not been released but when they do, we'll definitely post in here.
It has yet to be determined if Chevrolet dealers will be eligible to sell and service the car. In a news release, Jim Campbell, general manager for GM Fleet and Commercial Operations, said that the Caprice police car is the the right tool at the right time for law enforcement.He also said that the through police feedback, the Caprice has been designed to be superior to the Crown Victoria in key areas.The last rwd sedan offered by Chevrolet with a police pursuit package had been the 1996 Caprice. Chevrolet currently offers a police package on the Impala and the Tahoe. Competition in the police car segment includes the rwd Dodge Chargerand front-drive Chevrolet Impala. Law enforcement agencies tend to favor V-8-powered, rwd sedans due to handling characteristics and horsepower.
