Chevrolet dealerships will start taking orders for its new police car, the 2011 Caprice, next month. Chevrolet is particularly proud of this model’s interior space and the fact that it’s the carmaker’s first rear-wheel drive car since 1996. According to Al Oppenheiser, the vehicle's chief engineer, the Caprice has a “smaller overall exterior” and has “more interior volume than a Crown Victoria.”
This April, the first cars (unmarked sedans) will start arriving. The order books for patrol cars will be opened in January while delivery has been set to begin in June. Both of these cars will be 2011 models and bear a price tag of $30,995 before fleet incentives are taken into account. GM's Holden subsidiary in Australia will assemble the Caprice, which will then be shipped to a California port.
Full production will take place during the 2012 model year. By then, Chevrolet said that the processing of orders and the delivery will be completed in 14 to 16 weeks. Chevrolet will offer these cars with a five-year/100,000-mile warranty. Since the original Caprice was taken out of the market, the top selling car had been the Ford Crown Victoria. That the car is rwd is an advantage since law enforcement agencies favor rwd for its better handling characteristics, especially in high-speed pursuits. In the past decade, Chevrolet has offered a police version of the front-drive Impala; however, this vehicle was never able to match the sales success of the original Caprice.
