According to a US draft legislation on how to rate fuel economy of plug-in electric vehicles, the Chevrolet Volt is rated as averaging 230 miles per gallon in city driving conditions. GM chief executive officer Fritz Henderson said that under these guidelines, the Volt will be rated at 230mpg in town and more than 100mpg on average when it goes on sale in 2012. The most fuel-efficient vehicle on the market is the Toyota Prius, according to the US Environmental Protection Agency's latest figures. The Toyota Prius is rated at 51mpg in city driving and 48mpg on the motorway. These rates, however, were not calculated under the draft legislation's proposed new method.
