2011 Chevrolet Volt will have an all-electric range of up to 50 miles

General Motors Co. has been teasing the public with the gradual release of details about the Chevrolet Volt -- the upcoming star of its lineup. Finally, GM has provided details about the all-electric range of the vehicle. In relation to its nearing initial public offering (IPO), GM submitted an S1 document to the US Security and Exchange commission where GM stated that it will ensure an all-electric range of up to 50 miles (80 km).
However, GM clarified that this could go as low as 25 miles (40 km), depending on “terrain, driving technique, temperature and battery age.” In this document, GM had given minimum and maximum ranges that many say could mean that GM isn’t certain of the range or is simply playing it safe.
The industry considers 25 miles to be the worst indication of the plug-in’s capacity. But the 50-mile range is what all PHEVs are aiming for. Nonetheless, it should be noted that the Volt is a plug-in and not an electric vehicle. The electric motors function as range extenders, meaning that the Volt actually claims a total range of about 340 miles (547 km). [via GM-Volt]
