Toyota’s subsidiary, Kei, has recently released a new version of the popular Mira called the e:S. Kei vehicles are successful in Japan since they could avoid the very heavy local taxes and are less expensive to operate. Kei produces small pickup trucks and minivans on these platforms. The primary focus of this vehicle is to achieve higher fuel economy from this little car that’s actually already very efficient.

Toyota said that to make the engine very efficient, it has revised all aspects of the engine, transmission and body. The Mira e:S could use up to 40% less fuel than the conventional model. It is powered by a three-cylinder 650cc gasoline engine that offers 52hp at 6,800rpm and 60Nm (44 lb-ft) of peak torque at 5,200rpm.

The official fuel economy ratings for the car will run for 30 km on a liter of fuel (around 70.5 mpg US), according to the JC08 Mode test cycle. But on Japan's 10-15 Mode test cycle, it can go 32 kilometers per liter (75.2mpg US). The base Mira e:S remains to be expensive as it is priced at JPY800,000 ($10,500).
