2011 Ford Explorer U.S. buyers will pay more for a smaller engine

As you may know already, Ford unveiled today the re-engineered Explorer and made quite a buzz. What U.S. buyers of this new car, don´t know, is that they will pay more for less. Yes, the buyers of the 2011 Explorer will pay premium for a small four-cylinder engine when the vehicle goes on sale in December. The new Explorer will be offered as standard with a 3.5-liter V-6 engine capable to deliver 290 horsepower, with 53 hp more than the optional 4-cylinder. Apparently, Ford wants to convince customers that they should spend more in order to save. Which is a good marketing strategy when we think that the 2.0-liter 4-cylinder engine found in the new Explorer will deliver the same fuel economy as Toyota'sCamry sedan that gets 19 mpg in city driving and 26 mpg on the highway. We really want to make a statement that the old baggage on fuel economy with the Explorer is gone, Jim Holland, the Explorer's chief engineer, said. To get great fuel economy it takes technology, and it's our view that people will pay for that.
