Ford Motor Co. engineers have designed a new transmission for its 2011 Super Duty pickup, which is set to go on sale next spring. Ford claims that the new transmission will lead to “significant” performance and fuel economy improvements over the current five-speed automatic.
At a web conference, Dick Boerema, Ford engineering manager, said that the 2011 Super Duty pickup will be “a clean sheet” and that it won’t be an evolution of the current product. The truck will have a new body and will be equipped with Ford's first in-house designed diesel V-8 truck engine and a new six-speed automatic transmission. Continued after the jump!
Boerema further claims that it will be a significant improvement over what‚ currently available. Boerema didn‚Äôt say what the fuel economy figures are except only to state that it will be ‚Äúvery competitive.‚Äù
Actually, Ford wouldn’t need to stick fuel economy estimates on the pickup as the EPA requires of other vehicles because heavy-duty pickup trucks are in a different weight class and do not have to conform to passenger-car standards.
Ford says that it will reveal more details on the fuel economy of the truck as the launch nears.
