2011 Hyundai Sonata investigated by NHTSA for steering issues

2011 Hyundai Sonata

As you may know already the 2011 Hyundai Sonata made quite a buzz on the market, but as always, NHTSA (Highway Traffic Safety Administration) reviewed field reports saying that a separation of the intermediate steering shaft assembly upper universal joint resulted in a complete loss of steering capability, but not complete separation, of the upper universal joint connection. Apparently, this problem affects about 16,300 2011 Sonata vehicles, this means almost half of the cars in the United States. NHTSA also opened an investigation earlier this month after a complaint pointing out that the 2010 Kia Soul lost its steering. This problem occurred without warning and compromised the brake system. Kia and Hyundai are controlled by the parent company, Hyundai Kia Automotive Group. The company says that it isn’t aware of any accidents or injuries connected to the issue. "No defect has been identified. It's too early to draw any conclusions about anything," said Hyundai spokesman Jim Trainor. [via Detroit News]
