2011 Infiniti M will learn how to drive fuel-efficient using ‘Eco Pedal’

Do you want to improve fuel economy by up to 5% to 10% by simply driving differently? Then you should check out the "Eco pedal" of the new Infiniti M sedan, which was unveiled at the Los Angeles Auto Show. It boasts a tech package that includes the "Eco pedal" which will be wired into fuel management software and will put up a slight resistance to foot pressure when the car is being driven too aggressively for ideal fuel consumption.
John Weiner, Infiniti product planning director, said that the driver can choose to disregard the resistance or turn off the device but when the signal is heeded, a fuel economy improvement of up to 10% has been recorded.
The redesigned sedan comes in two engine configurations: the M56, with a 5.6-liter V-8, and the M37, with 3.7-liter V-6. Ben Poore, Infiniti Business Unit vice president, said the Eco pedal and other new M technologies are expected to help boost sales for the luxury brand's flagship despite the struggling economy. Poore said that it is a "good time" to launch a new M. He said that since the "economy is coming back, and a lot of new product is coming out in the segment: the new Bmw 5-Series, the new Mercedes-Benz S-Class," he thinks that the newness of the products will create growth for the whole segment. The M goes on sale next spring but pricing has yet to be released. [via autonews - sub. required]
