2011 KTM 990 SMT
The new KTM 990 SMT has recently debuted at the Intermot Show in Cologne. The Austrian motorcycle manufacturer has dubbed it “the queen of negative acceleration.” This model, acclaimed as one of the world’s best big-bore supermotos, features an anti-lock braking system. Weighing just one kilogram, this system was developed in close collaboration with specialist supplier Bosch. It was specifically adapted to the needs of a very sporty Supermoto.
The long-distance supermoto SMT features a liquid-cooled 115bhp V-Twin engine and is equipped with Brembo radial four pot callipers which, results to a sensitive ABS braking system that enables the 990 SMT “stop safely and with pinpoint accuracy on any surface and from any speed,” as claimed by KTM. The system was designed to be as minimal as possible and it uses what KTM dubs “rollover detection.”
As a result, the system can be turned off manually for stints in the dirt. The bike can be considered as a 990 Super Duke designed for extended-range comfort and installed with standard detachable soft luggage. The bike also features long-travel suspension and an upright seating position, while the fairing and flyscreen offer wind protection. The KTM 990 Supermoto T is expected to compete with the Ducati Multistrada 1200 S Touring, Yamaha Super Tenere, BMW RT1200GS, as well as other road-going adventure bikes that have the braking technology.
