Lexus gave more details about the CT 200h model, the new small luxury hybrid car that will start selling in Europe this autumn. According to the driver’s choice of selectable drive modes for the full hybrid system, the CT 200h will be available in two different driving “moods” – Dynamic and Relaxing. The vehicle is powered by a 1.8-litre VVT-i petrol engine, an electric motor and an electrically controlled continuously variable transmission (E-CVT). In a company statement, it was revealed that the EV (electric vehicle), ECO and NORMAL modes focus on the ride comfort, smooth acceleration and low NVH levels in the cabin to achieve a relaxing drive. The CT 200h is a full hybrid and can operate automatically in EV modes and turns off the petrol engine. When running on electric motor alone, it can go up to speeds of 30 mph.
When this mode is used, tailpipe emissions are eliminated and it’s perfect to be used in slow urban traffic. The level of battery charge and local conditions determine the driving range. The driver can choose the EV mode manually. Its systems automatically adjust when switching to ECO mode to have maximum efficiency. When the driver bears down hard on the accelerator, its throttle responses are moderated. And to reduce fuel consumption, its air conditioning performance is adjusted. When on the Sport mode, the performance is maximized as there’s an increase in the dynamics and power delivery from the electric motor. The instrument panel also changes when the switch is made for a more dynamic performance. The instrument backlighting instantly shifts from hybrid blue to red and a tachometer display replaces the hybrid power meter. On Sept. 30, Lexus will reveal the pricing details of the CT 200h at the upcoming Paris auto show.
