2011 Mazda2/Demio will be world’s most fuel-efficient gasoline car

As you may know already, Mazda introduced the 2011 Mazda2/Demio Facelift at the 2010 Paris Motor Show and made quite a buzz, but what you didn’t know is that the Japanese manufacturer says that the new hatchback may be the most fuel-efficient gasoline car in the world. Whoa!? Yes, according to Mazda, the subcompact would get fuel economy of 30 km/liter (70 mpg), without any help from an electric motor… imagine what would happen if we’d have a hybrid version of the Mazda2!
Apparently, the new car is the first to be fitted with Mazda's next-generation gasoline and diesel engine and transmission technology, dubbed SKYACTIV. Mazda wants to improve fuel economy of its cars by 30 percent by 2015, and the SKYACTIV is the perfect technology to do that.
According to the manufacturer, we will find the SKYACTIV technology on all of its cars by around 2016. "I promise that we will offer the Demio at a lower price than a hybrid of the same segment," CEO Takashi Yamanouchi told a news conference. Mazda says that its new direct injection petrol engine can deliver the impressive fuel consumption due to the world's highest engine compression ratio. [via autonews - sub. required]
