2011 Mercedes-Benz S63 AMG: first details revealed

The new 2011 Mercedes-Benz S63 AMG, which is slated to go on sale this September, is equipped with a new V8 that offers more power and torque compared to the previous year and yet it consumes 25% less fuel. Mercedes-Benz revealed that the smaller displacement "M157" 5.5-liter V-8 engine powering the 2011 Mercedes-Benz S63 AMG is an all-new design. It features direct-injection and twin-turbochargers to simultaneously boost performance and fuel economy. The car is then enabled to deliver 544hp and 590 pound-feet of torque. There is an available Performance Pack that increases output to 571hp and 664 pound-feet of torque.
Mercedes-Benz claims that in the S63 AMG, the engine delivers a fuel economy of 22.4 mpg. Nonetheless, the sedan still performs like a sports car. It is able to reach 60mph from a standstill in 4.5 seconds with the standard 544 horsepower engine and only 4.4 seconds with the available Performance Pack. Top speed is electronically limited to 155 mph. Contributing to fuel economy is the car's standard AMG SPEEDSHIFT MCT seven-speed automatic transmission that includes an engine-stop start system.
The seven-speed sports transmission, which features seven gears, three driving modes and a double-declutch function, offers driver's manual-like gear changes with the ease of an automatic. The conventional torque converter is replaced by a wet start-up clutch, which runs in an oil bath. Due to its low rotational inertia, the transmission is highly responsive and since it doesn't suffer the losses typical of a torque converter transmission, it saves fuel.
