Building the “ultimate small block muscle car" is what Shelby had in mind when it decided to create a new 624hp "R" tune upgrade to the 525hp 2011 Shelby GT350, according to John Luft, president of Shelby American. Shelby was able to get 624hp out of the supercharged Ford 5.0-liter V-8 through a blower upgrade. However, Shelby has yet to provide details with regards to performance and torque. Notably, Shelby also offers an 800hp GT500 Super Snake. Luft added that these results indicate that the Shelby GT350 brings American performance to a completely new level. Recent tests have proven that the standard supercharged car can reach 60 miles per hour in only 3.7 seconds and it can run the quarter-mile in 12 seconds flat at 121.4 mph.
It does this by generating 1.05g of lateral acceleration and being able to stop from 60 mph in only 107 feet. But then, Luft believes that the 'R' tuned GT350 will be “even faster." But of course, Shelby realizes that these options for the GT350 don’t appeal to everyone. For those who don’t like blowers, Shelby offers a naturally-aspirated GT350 with 430hp, only slightly higher than the output of the stock Mustang GT.
There’s also something for those who plan to autocross the car (which means that the engine can’t be modified): a GT350 model with suspension, body and brake upgrades only. An automatic transmission is also offered on non-supercharged models. The autocross special is priced at $26,995, on top of the cost of a brand new 2011 Ford Mustang GT. For $57,490, the buyer receives a naturally-aspirated GT350, a no-option model with no dealer mark-up at its $30,495 base price. A new Mustang that’s equipped with a blower has an output of 525hp. This is very impressive but then, the buyer will have to pay $33,995. When the price of a new Mustang is added, this vehicle would cost at least $64,490. The price for the "R" tune upgrade hasn’t been revealed yet but it’s definitely going to cost a bit more.
