Skoda is introducing a new 4x4 drivetrain for its Superb and Octavia models. Many consumers looking for a hatchback or an estate have narrowed down their choice to the Octavia, with its spacious trunk and high trim levels. The fact that it costs less than the Volkswagen models it is based on makes it even more appealing. But with the new system, Skoda aims to make its models even more enticing. The system includes a Haldex all-wheel drivetrain with a DSG gearbox powered by a 2.0 liter TDI CR 140 hp engine. Owners of the Superb, Octavia Estate and Octavia Scout can opt for this system.
It joins the Yeti in the 4x4 lineup. In this system, power is distributed electrically, with the use of a fourth-generation Heldex clutch. Typically, 96% of the total power is directed to the front, improving fuel efficiency. Depending on the road conditions, the electronic sensors redirect power to the wheels that have sufficient traction. Skoda said that the 4x4 system makes towing caravans and trailers much safer and easier.
Several Volkswagen AG cars, a well as Volvos, also use the Haldex systems. Primarily, it is designed as a non-permanent 4x4 for transverse-engined models. This system is ideal for normal road cars that only have to go off-road occasionally because of its short reaction time (only a seventh of a wheel spin) when compared to systems like a viscous coupling. The Haldex AWD has actually been offered on the Octavia starting 10 years ago but this is the first time that it is featured with a DSG gearbox. Priced from GBP21,705, this package will be available in the UK starting November 2010.
