2011 Volvo S60/V60 R-Design
Following the tradition, Volvo unveiled today the S60 and V60 R-Design, two new sporty versions which will deliver a new driving experience. Besides the striking red colour, the new cars also offer new body kits consisting of a new front bumper, aluminum covers for the side mirrors, a new rear roof spoiler (available only for the V60 version) and a new rear bumper air diffuser and integrated exhaust system. But the changes were not made only to the exterior. As expected, the new vehicles are now fitted with a strut brace, a bar that ties together the suspension strut towers in order to stiff up the body structure and make the steering feel more responsive.
At the rear, the S60 and V60 R-Design are now fitted with monotube dampers. Unlike the the twin-tube dampers previously used, these monotube damper features compression and return damping via the same valve. This means the damper responds more quickly. Furthermore, the front and rear springs have been shortened by 15 mm, in order to improve the handling. The bushings with which the rear dampers are attached to the body are 20 percent stiffer compared with the dynamic chassis in the S60 and V60.
The cars are also fitted with a range of electronic systems that sharpen the sporty driving experience still further. Both vehicles use the Corner Traction Control, a system that uses torque vectoring to make for smoother cornering, but also the DSTC (Dynamic Stability and Traction Control). Regarding the engines, the R-Design version can be combined with a range of petrol and diesel engines, from an economical DRIVe version producing 115 horsepower to a high-performance turbo version with 304 horsepower.
