The European safety watchdog, the Euro NCAP, has awarded five-star ratings to the new Sharan and the new Passat, the two latest models from Volkswagen. The Euro NCAP conducted regular crash tests on these two vehicles. The Sharan garnered a 96% rating -- one of the highest ever results in Euro NCAP’s toughest tests to date. The Passat got a similar score. The reason why these vehicles got such excellent ratings is that they feature optimized body-shell rigidity and highly effective airbag and driver assistance systems including ABS (Anti-lock Braking System) with HBA (Hydraulic Brake Assist) and ESP (Electronic Stabilization Program). Occupants are very safe in the Sharan, with its nine airbags composed of a curtain airbag system for all three rows of seats, side airbags for the first two rows of seats and driver and passenger airbags. There’s also an additional airbag to protect the driver’s knees. Meanwhile, the more high-end Passat is offered with automatic fatigue detection system and city emergency braking function.
