German tuner Alpina has launched the D5 Bi-Turbo, a project based on the BMW 5 Series, to prove its point that diesel engines are incredible machines. Alpina has developed a 3.0-liter twin-turbocharged straight six unit that generates 350 hp. It is linked to a modified ZF Switch-Tronic eight-speed automatic transmission.
What’s surprising is that even if it delivers a high degree of power, it still is as fuel-efficient as the 245 hp BMW 530d with a rating of 6.2 liters per 100 km. The vehicle can accelerate from zero to 62 mph in 5.2 seconds and it has a top speed of 168 mph (270 km/h).
For improved handling, Alpina lowered the suspension. It has also been given 20-inch Alpina Classic rims that are covered in Michelin Pilot Super Sport tires (255/35 at the front and 285/30 at the rear). Consumers may also get it in the Touring (wagon) version.
