2012 Camaro LFX Engine

The 2012 Chevrolet Camaro will be equipped with a new, more potent and more efficient version of the 3.6L direct-injected V-6 as standard. It boasts of an SAE-certified output of 323hp (241 kW) at 6,800 rpm—about 11hp (8 kW) more than 2011 models. Compared to the current engine, the 3.6L V-6 is lighter by 20.5 pounds (9.3 kg), raising efficiency and driving dynamics. This engine, which has a new “LFX” engine code, has received refinements such as the use of new, lighter-weight components and enhancements meant to boost performance, efficiency and durability.

The 2012 Camaro 2LS model, which has more power than the current 3.6L, delivers an estimated 30 mpg on the highway with the LFX engine. The 3.6L features a 60-degree design. To save weight, its cylinder block and cylinder heads are cast in aluminum. A forged steel crankshaft offers optimal strength in the bottom end. Its cylinder heads include four valves per cylinder and it has a dual overhead camshaft design to incorporate infinitely variable cam phasing.

The LFX engine weighs considerably less than the current 3.6L V-6. Its integrated cylinder head/exhaust manifold design is lighter by about 13 pounds (6 kg) per engine compared to the cylinder heads and manifolds of the existing engine. On the other hand, the new composite intake manifold is lighter by about 5.5 pounds (2.5 kg) over the current aluminum intake. In addition, it has a lighter-weight structural front cover and lighter-weight, high-strength connecting rods to achieve total weight savings of 20.5 pounds (9.3 kg), making the vehicle more fuel-efficient and boosting its feeling of driving balance.
