2012 Chevrolet Camaro gets the highest-possible score in NHTSA crash tests

2011 Chevrolet Camaro Crash Test

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has given the 2012 Chevrolet Camaro a perfect rating on the front, side and rollover tests -- the first car to do so. On the other hand, the Ford Mustang only earned four of five stars in the front and side crash tests. This is a major deciding factor for potential buyers since the Camaro and Mustang GT have comparable horsepower. The NHTSA has raised its standards since 2011. The agency conducts the front-end tests at 35 mph and the side crash at 38.5 mph.

It also does a slower 20 mph side-impact test against a narrow pole. The NHTSA makes use of a math formula to find out the likeliness of a rollover. Of course, there are other cars that are worth the consideration of enthusiasts. The NHTSA hasn’t tested all of the 2012 models yet, one of which is the Dodge Challenger. The Honda Accord and Kia Optima were the next best-rated. They got five stars for all categories except for the side-impact tests where they only earned four.

Camaro has always been about performance, and that includes safety performance,” said Al Oppenheiser, Camaro chief engineer. “We always strive for five-star ratings, and the fact that we achieved them under more rigorous requirements is a great accomplishment.”
