2012 Chevrolet Sonic sedan was the result of proportional thinking

The 2012 Chevrolet Sonic sedan was a result of proportional thinking, literally. Ken Parkinson, executive director for GM design and Chevrolet brand champion, revealed that during the design process, they were comparing the Sonic sedan with its same-length hatchback sibling and felt that the former did not feel proportionally right. So they decided to “add a little bit more on the rear length, pull the car together again and step back, and all of a sudden it felt really good,” Parkinson said.
The result was a Sonic sedan that’s 14.1 inches longer than the Sonic hatchback. General Motors had originally planned only to make the Sonic a little longer to create “an appropriate amount of cargo space under the rear decklid,” Parkinson revealed.
The executive director remarked that due to the new longer design, they encountered issues with engineering and manufacturing. However, the design prevailed since the sedan still met targets it needs to meet. When the first Sonic sedan went out the assembly lines, it had good proportions and a trunk that is around the same size as the larger Chevy Cruze. [source: Autonews]
