2012 Detroit Auto Show: Smart For-Us Concept is a very small pickup

Smart For-Us Concept

The Smart For-Us Concept was unveiled today at the 2012 Detroit Auto Show and according to the manufacturer it promises to turn the automotive world upside down and challenge ideas about what an urban pickup should look like. As expected, the concept is also an EV and features a 55 kW magneto-electric motor. With a maximum torque of 130 Nm, the concept has a maximum speed that exceeds 120 km/h or 74 mph. The lithium-ion battey has a capacity of 17.6 kWh and a full recharge takes about eight hours from a household socket or charging station. With its exterior dimensions (length/width/height: 3547/1506/1701 mm) it could almost go unnoticed on the loading area of a typical pickup, and it also anything but ordinary under the body.

The For-Us concept is raised by 50 millimetres comparing it with the standard Smart ForTwo and according to the manufacturer its electric drive could be extended in the direction of a 4x4 with two front wheel hub motors. The longer wheelbase (2480 mm/plus 613 mm) and the track that has been widened by 50 mm on each side also emphasize the robust look of the study.

The wheels are wrapped in Michelin off-road tyres. The Smart For-Us Concept is also capable to carry a Smart eBike. For more details about this bike you can read this article. Smart CEO Dr. Annette Winkler says "We at smart love pick-ups – if they are small on the outside, large on the inside, very safe and extremely comfortable. With the smart for-us a petrol station is no longer required!”
