2012 Ford Explorer Police Interceptor Utility
Ford announced today its new Police Interceptor utility based on the impressive 2011 Explorer. Set to join forces in late 2011, the new car is Ford's first-ever specially designed Police Interceptor utility and promises to deliver at least 20 percent better fuel economy than the current Crown Victoria Police Interceptor. Why? Because under the hood we find the fuel-efficient 3.5-liter V6 engine delivering at least 280 horsepower and E85 compatibility, mated to a six-speed automatic transmission. Just like the sedan, the new utility version of the Police Interceptor introduces plenty of safety features such as Safety Canopy side-curtain airbag rollover protection system that helps protect passengers in both rollover and side-impact crashes but also multiple side-curtain airbags use Ford's unique roll-fold technology to help position them between the occupant and the side window. To keep the car on the ground, the new car was fitted with Ford's state-of-the-art curve control technology, which was designed to help drivers maintain control when taking curves at high speeds.
Inside, the vehicle was designed in order to maximize officer comfort and cargo capacity: we have new front seats designed with a lower bolster to accommodate utility belts but also a column shift in order to leave the console area free for the ever-increasing amounts of equipment necessary for officers to do their jobs. The second row features a vinyl, easy-to-clean bench seat that folds flat for versatility.
Additional space is provided for the K-9 officers and SWAT operations, including room for the full-size spare tire to be stored safely under the cargo area. Furthermore, the car is fitted with the Ford SYNC, BLIS (Blind Spot Information System), cross-traffic alert, rear view camera, reverse sensing system, remappable steering wheel controls and Standard AdvanceTrac with RSC (Roll Stability Control).
