Rolls-Royce Motor Cars has introduced the Phantom Series II at the 2012 Geneva Motor Show. Rolls-Royce wants this lineup of cars, which include the Phantom Saloon, Phantom Drophead Coupé and Phantom Coupé, to reflect this new world and so it made updates to its design that were contemporary but timeless. It introduced the latest technologies that significantly enhance the drive-train, ease-of-use and connectivity of the car. Rolls-Royce is the first to use full LED headlamps as standard equipment on a production car. It also presented new technologies that offer improved control lighting as well as a whiter light, augmenting safety and averting driver tiredness.
For instance, the curve light functionality uses electronically-controlled reflectors so that headlamp beams could be focused in the direction of travel, offering greater illumination of the road ahead when cornering. Depending on the different driving speeds, the adaptive headlamps could change the cone of light projected onto a road. Each component of the Phantom experience had to be effortless so this led to the introduction of new driver assistance technologies and a modern user interface with re-designed multi-media controller to the Phantom Series II.
The new satellite navigation system was fully updated with functions that include 3D maps with landscape topography, guided tours and improved points of interest, as well as composite route planning. The information, maps and video content are shown on Phantom’s bigger 8.8 inch control centre display, a feature highlighted by eight programmable bookmarks giving access to major functions at a driver’s fingertips. Maneuvering gets easier with front, rear and top-view camera systems. For example, rear path prediction instantly deploys on the screen when doing reverse parking. The V12 direct injection engine is complemented by a new 8-speed automatic gearbox and rear differential. Fuel consumption is improved by 10% on the combined cycle and its CO2 emissions dropped from 388 to 347 g/km as a result.
