Hyundai’s latest i30 hatch has been unveiled at the Frankfurt Auto Show. This five-door model, which rivals the Focus in Europe, features an all-new design that has the same design language as US models like the Elantra. However, it has a European accent, evident on its slightly different grille. This model will be offered in Europe with a variety of choices, including two direct-injection gasoline engines with a displacement of 1.4-liters and 1.6-liters as well as two CRDi turbo diesels that have exactly the same capacities. Its top-of-the-line model has an output of 135hp and uses a manual gearbox.
The new-generation i30 has a typical Hyundai family face as it has the distinct hexagonal-shaped front grille, its headlamps have a jewel-like design, and it comes with unique daytime running lights. These lights are angular and housed within a more softly-edged recess, giving the car some personality and a sense of refinement and luxury, according to Thomas Bürkle, Chief Designer at Hyundai Motor Europe Technical Centre.
Bürkle added that via the profile of the new generation i30, there is a strong character line running over the front and rear wheel arches all the way to the tail lamps. It also has a “softer, lower character line” that goes up the car’s flank to create a “play of light and shadow – a fundamental feature of fluidic sculpture.” By next year, Hyundai will likely offer other i30 variants such as a 3-door or a sedan. Notably, this is based on the Elantra, which has a Tourer version in the U.S.
