The Insignia BiTurbo, Opel/Vauxhall’s most powerful diesel engine ever, is now available in the Insignia range. It is capable of delivering 195PS and 400Nm of torque and it has low CO2 emissions of 129g/km. This engine, which is currently on sale, is available in five-door Hatch and Sports Tourer versions in SRi, SRi Vx-line and Elite trim, with a starting price of £27,120 (33,405 Euro in Europe) on the road. This powerful, twin-sequential turbocharged diesel is based on the existing 1956cc unit that is featured on key models in the Insignia and Astra and new Zafira Tourer range. But when in BiTurbo form, the engine can deliver as much as 35PS more power while its torque has been boosted by 50Nm.
This enables the vehicle to reduce its 0-60mph acceleration time by almost one second to 8.2 seconds (Insignia FWD Hatch). But with the help of a package filled with eco features (which include standard Start/Stop across the range), the FWD Hatch can provide a combined 57.6mpg. This is an improvement of 2.2mpg compared to the single-turbo 2.0 CDTi 160PS model. What makes the Insignia BiTurbo exceptional in this class is its use of sequential turbocharging. At lower engine speeds, the smaller turbo can quickly accelerate and this removes ‘lag’, offering 350Nm of torque from only 1500rpm. These two turbochargers work together in the mid-range.
A bypass valve permits the gases to flow from the small to large unit. When in this phase, the maximum torque of 400Nm is made between 1750-2500rpm. Performance is maintained at higher engine speeds since from 3000rpm, all gases flow directly to the larger turbo. This power increase is complemented by Vauxhall’s clever FlexRide adaptive damping, which is offered as standard on all Insignia BiTurbos. This is typically an option on front-wheel drive Insignias that costs £790. Within milliseconds, this system responds to driver inputs and it can ‘learn’ how the driver is handling the car. The damper settings are then adjusted accordingly. Drivers could choose from Tour and Sport buttons. The throttle, steering and damper settings in Sport mode can be selected separately.
