Jaguar Land Rover said it has awarded more than GBP2 billion ($3.3 billion) worth of supply contracts to 40-plus British companies for its new Range Rover Evoque model. After winning a global tendering exercise, these companies will supply components for the new Range Rover coupe and five-door vehicles. Some companies that received the contracts include International Automotive Components, Johnson Controls and Magna International on Merseyside; McKecknie and Kostal in Yorkshire; and Sertec, Walsall Pressings and Kautex Unipart in the West Midlands.

After a tour of JLR’s Halewood plant in Merseyside, the U.K.’s business secretary Vince Cable said the U.K. automotive supply chain can score major contracts and create vital jobs in the country. Due to arrive in dealerships in 2011, the Evoque is the smallest and most fuel-efficient Range Rover, JLR’s website said. It is also the first of several new products planned during the next five years.

JLR CEO Ralf Speth said the contracts will mean a “high level of investment” by the company in the future and represents a “tremendous opportunity for U.K. suppliers to work in partnership with Jaguar Land Rover to really strengthen the supplier base in this country.” [via autonews - sub. required]
