Ford wowed the visitors at the 2012 SEMA Show with its unveiling of the Mustang Cobra Jet concept. This vehicle features a twin-turbo setup on the already powerful 5.0-liter V8 that could be found inside the Mustang GT. The Cobra Jet is based on a factory drag racer, which had previously used a supercharger to get an extra boost. But for the 2013 model, it gets a power boost from Borg-Warner turbo chargers, which are based on the units found in the Ford Focus ST. Ford explained that the supercharger that it used in the past had up to 100 hp at high boost levels. This had taken some of the power away from the car’s acceleration, which has since been repaired. Turbo engineer Dave Born said that to get past the lag (which is the biggest disadvantage of turbocharging), they chose the smallest possible turbos that will provide the airflow needed. He also said that it received some improvements to boost the responsiveness. They also made it have very low inertia and very low internal friction. Currently, the turbocharged Mustang Cobra Jet is only a concept and may have been unveiled only to preview a Mustang with EcoBoost power.
