Last week we saw a video teaser but today everything became official: this is the Bentley Continental GT V8. The British manufacturer is set to unveil the two new Continental GT V8 models (coupe and GTC Convertible) at the 2012 Detroit Auto Show and as expected, these models will be cheaper and boost Bentley’s sales. It’s not a secret that the new V8 models use the new 4.0-liter TFSI engine found also on the Audi S7, S6 and the S8 flagship sedan. On the Bentley Continental GT, the V8 engine delivers 500bhp (507PS/373Kw) at 6000 rev/min and 660Nm (487 lb ft) available from 1700 to 5000 rev/min.
The engine is mated to a new close-ratio 8-speed automatic transmission capable to push the car from 0 to 60 mph (96 km/h) in less than 5 seconds and to a top speed of over 180mph (290km/h). Still, the new Continental GT V8 has a low fuel consumption compared to the W12-powered model and it can travel over 500 miles (800km) on a single tank of fuel. The new V8 engine features variable displacement with a highly sophisticated engine management system, ensuring a seamless and imperceptible transition from V8 to V4 mode under light throttle load. The new V8 models will be distinguished by a black gloss matrix grille with chrome frame and centre bar, a red enamel Bentley ‘B’ badge, and a black matrix three-segment lower front bumper divided by distinctive body-coloured strakes.
Moreover, the rear will feature chromed ‘figure eight’ exhaust tailpipes, a dark lower valance and red enamel ‘B’ bootlid badge emphasise the sporty, contemporary identity of the new V8s. Both models will come as standard with 20-inch alloy wheels but Bentley will offer an optional 21-inch six-spoke design which is available in dramatic Diamond Black (exclusive to the Continental V8) or Diamond Silver finishes. The interior shows an Eliade cloth headlining, new contemporary Dark Fiddleback Eucalyptus veneers, optional two-tone leather colour split and short centre console continue the fresh, sporting design theme. A short centre console in place of W12 through-console will also be offered, as well as unique two-tone leather colour split.
